Don’t Just Take Our Word For It: Washington County Has Some of the Region’s Best Wine
October 7th, 2009 by Sylke Neal-Finnegan
Many of us at the Washington County Visitors Association love to drink wine. (You can call it a perk of living and working in the gateway of Oregon’s Wine Country.) Like several of my colleagues, I have a small wine collection, which includes a variety of Washington County wines. And, as my friends and family can attest, I give bottles of my favorite Washington County wines as presents.
I am not the only one singing the praises of the glorious grape. The September 2009 issue of “Portland Monthly” magazine is dedicated to Oregon wines, and its editors anointed 50 lucky ones as being the best in the state. I was pleasantly surprised to see several Washington County wines on the list, including three I have not tasted (I have indicated this with an asterisk*).
Included in the list are:
- Hawks View Cellars‘ 2007 Pinot Noir*
- Hawks View Cellars’ 2008 Pinot Gris*
- Cooper Mountain Vineyards‘ 2007 Pinot Gris (20th Anniversary Reserve)
- Montinore Estate‘s 2006 Gewürztraminer
- Cooper Mountain Vineyards’ 2008 Tocai Friulano*
Not to be outdone, “Seattle Metropolitan” magazine came out with its list of the best Northwest Wines under $50, and included was Ponzi Vineyard’s 2007 Arneis, which was among the wines served at one of the official Presidential inauguration dinners this past January.
Don’t just take my word for it. Taste for yourself why Washington County’s wines are making a splash. Many of the area’s 24 wineries have tasting rooms that are open to the public; of those, most are open year-round. Every Thanksgiving weekend (Friday through Sunday) area wineries open their doors for special tastings (including those that are not regularly open to the public).
