Counting Down the Days Until Memorial Day Wine Weekend

April 15th, 2011 by WCVA

This year marks the 21st annual “Memorial Day Weekend in Wine Country,” when wineries throughout the Willamette Valley open their doors for a weekend of fun, food and entertainment. With more than 20 wineries welcoming visitors for tastings, entertainment and specials, Washington County will be one of the hottest spots in the valley to sip new and library releases of pinot noir and other varietals. Plus, during Memorial Day weekend, many visitors are offered a chance to visit numerous wineries that are not regularly open to the public.

For a complete list of participating wineries throughout the region, visit North Willamette Vintners Association, Chehalem Mountain Winegrowers Association and Willamette Valley Wineries Association.

Want to map your route to the wineries? Start with the Vineyard and Valley Scenic Tour Route, a 50-mile driving tour of Washington County’s agricultural and viticultural bounty. Download the map and set out for a wine weekend adventure. (Note: Because portions include narrow county roads, low bridge overpasses and winding roads, the route is not recommended for tour buses or bicyclists.)

Sip 47: The Road Less Traveled, Holiday Edition

December 10th, 2010 by Sylke Neal-Finnegan

Just when I thought that the holiday party season was over, this piece of news came across my e-mail, thanks to the keen eye of our stakeholder development manager, Allison George. This weekend, five wineries in Washington County–Montinore Estate, Patton Valley Vineyards, Plum Hill Vineyards, Elk Cove Vineyards and Kramer Vineyards will open their doors as they celebrate the season with holiday treats, gift ideas, wine tastings and more.

“Holidays on Highway 47″ will be held this Saturday and Sunday (Dec. 11 and 12), from 11 a.m. until 5 p.m. Admission is free, tasting fees vary. A portion of tasting fees from this event will benefit Salud!, a non-profit organization dedicated to providing access to health care services for Oregon’s seasonal vineyard workers and their families.

Don’t Just Take Our Word For It: Washington County Has Some of the Region’s Best Wine

October 7th, 2009 by Sylke Neal-Finnegan

purplegrapesMany of us at the Washington County Visitors Association love to drink wine. (You can call it a perk of living and working in the gateway of Oregon’s Wine Country.) Like several of my colleagues, I have a small wine collection, which includes a variety of Washington County wines. And, as my friends and family can attest, I give bottles of my favorite Washington County wines as presents.

I am not the only one singing the praises of the glorious grape. The September 2009 issue of “Portland Monthly” magazine is dedicated to Oregon wines, and its editors anointed 50 lucky ones as being the best in the state. I was pleasantly surprised to see several Washington County wines on the list, including three I have not tasted (I have indicated this with an asterisk*).

Included in the list are:

Not to be outdone, “Seattle Metropolitan” magazine came out with its list of the best Northwest Wines under $50, and included was Ponzi Vineyard’s 2007 Arneis, which was among the wines served at one of the official Presidential inauguration dinners this past January.

Don’t just take my word for it. Taste for yourself why Washington County’s wines are making a splash. Many of the area’s 24 wineries have tasting rooms that are open to the public; of those, most are open year-round. Every Thanksgiving weekend (Friday through Sunday) area wineries open their doors for special tastings (including those that are not regularly open to the public).

Savoring Sunday

February 24th, 2009 by Rhiannon

Many of Washington County’s wineries host special events on holiday weekends, and this year’s Valentine’s Day was no exception. I headed out with my friend/co-worker Cherie, her hubby Darrell, their twin boys and our friend Ming for a day of fun on the west side of the county. We’d been anxious to test out the wines at the newly-opened Plum Hill Vineyards, and we were very impressed! Juanita and RJ Lint, the owners, had a full flight of six of their own wines and two additional pours from their friends at Thistle Wines in Dundee. They also had a full spread of very yummy food (spicy blue cheese “cake” anyone?), and they invited the folks from L-Bar-T Bison Ranch to offer samples of their pepperoni, summer sausage and jerky. The tasting room is so homey and comfortable that we could have stayed all day, but alas, other wineries were calling our names!

Our next stop was Montinore Estate, always a favorite of mine. A tasting there consists of any five wines from their extensive list, and we all had our own opinions on the perfect combination. My favorite is their Ruby, a Pinot Noir port that makes me want to curl up in front of a crackling fire. Lovely.

Another quick drive led us to SakéOne, where we enjoyed their “For the Love of Nigori” exotic chocolate and saké pairings. My favorite saké (as usual) was the Coconut Lemongrass, and we all LOVED the Domori Latte Sal chocolate from Italy. The Japanese atmosphere must have inspired Cherie, because in the middle of our tasting she suggested we make our next stop dinner at Syun Izakaya in Hillsboro. It sounded like a great idea, so off we went. We ordered a ton of sushi, hand rolls, sashimi and tempura, and we managed to eat most of it! It was a perfect way to wrap up a lovely day with friends.
