Hooray for Bollywood

Washington County is home to several of the area’s most authentic shops and restaurants, which celebrate the culture, gifts and cuisine from countries around the globe. Further cementing its status as Oregon’s most ethnically diverse area is Joy Theater–the only theater of its kind in the state.
This is no ordinary theater. It is the area’s only venue that regularly shows films from India, and features Hindi-language films (also known by many as “Bollywood” films), as well as Tamil- and Telugu-language films from South India.
Bollywood films have earned critical praise worldwide in recent years, and are categorized by lavish song-and-dance numbers, featuring traditional music and choreographed dance moves. Western film has been influenced over the years by Indian cinema, most notably, 2008’s British award-winning film “Slumdog Millionaire.”
The films shown at Joy Cinema are limited-run (films change often), feature some of the most popular actors in India, and most (if not all) are shown with English subtitles. Tickets are $10 for adults, and $5 for children 3-7 years of age.
